Defoamers - Effective anti foam agents
Unwanted foam can impair processes in industry, food processing and wastewater treatment. To break down and prevent the formation of foam bubbles on the surface, special anti-foam agents are used in many industrial processes. In order to prevent foam formation and to achieve an antifoam effect, defoamers or deaerators are added to the system. These products can be as individual in their effect and system compatibility as the root-cause of the foaming itself.
Foam is differentiated between the macrofoam visible on the surface and the microfoam encased in the liquid, which is characterized by the distribution of very fine foam bubbles.
Defoamers are primarily used for removing surface foam, avoiding air inclusions and spontaneous foam destabilization, while deaerators help to remove finely distributed air from the liquid.
The generation of foam is often fostered by the entry of air or gas into a liquid medium. Due to mechanical impact such as stirring or mixing, air is encased or displaced with the result of bubbles on the surface. Typical substances that cause foam include surfactants, proteins, starch or glucosides.

The advantage of silicone based defoamers in industrial processing is their ability to avoid surface foam and also release entrained air. Water based defoamers on the other hand consist of a dispersion of different oils or waxes in water to ensure that entrained air can be released.
